Mocking Up a Product When You Can't Draw: Midjourney as a Crutch

I can't sketch to save my life. Three prompts got me a mockup a designer took seriously.

I cannot draw. Not badly, just not at all. For years that meant every product idea died in my head because I couldn't show it. Midjourney became the crutch that got ideas out of my skull.

The first lesson is brutal: 'a nice app for tracking workouts' produces garbage, because it's a wish, not a description. What worked was specifying the surface, phone screen, top nav with three tabs, a list view on the left, a circular progress ring, muted colors, no text. The model needs the frame, not the feeling.

Second lesson: iterate on the constraint, not the whole thing. I locked the layout with --ar 9:16 and then only changed the words about color and material across five tries. Chasing a perfect image in one prompt is how you burn a hundred generations and hate all of them.

Third, and this matters for work: I stamp 'concept, not final' on anything I show, because a pretty render invites people to critique the wrong thing. They'll argue the purple instead of the flow. Say it's a mockup and they argue the flow, which is what you wanted.

Did a designer take it seriously? He laughed, then built on it. The image wasn't the product, it was the conversation starter, and for someone who can't draw, that's the whole win.
