Swap a Background in Runway Without Reshooting the Actor

You shot the performer against a wall. Runway's segmentation lets you put them anywhere without a green screen.

I recorded a talking segment in a cramped office and needed it to look like a studio. Runway's video segmentation isolated the person, and I dropped in a new background plate. No reshoot, no green screen, no apologizing to the actor for the lighting.

The clean version: generate or source a background that matches your subject's lighting direction, then use the segmentation mask to composite. If the new backdrop is lit from the left and your actor from the right, it looks like a cutout. Match the light and the lie holds.

Where it falls apart is motion. A static shot swaps cleanly; a walking shot needs the mask to track, and Runway is good but not perfect at the edges. For anything with movement, shoot against a plain wall so the mask has less to fight.

This replaces a half-day of reshoots with a twenty-minute composite, as long as you respect the lighting. The tool handles the cutout. You handle whether anyone believes it.
