Open Source Models Got Scary Good in 2026. Here's the Catch.
You can now run something close to last year's flagship on a single GPU. The catch is not what you think.
Two years ago, "open weights" meant a model you were slightly embarrassed to use. That gap is gone. A few of the community models released this winter are genuinely good at the things normal people actually do.
So why is everyone still paying for the closed ones? Because running a model is not the hard part anymore. Hosting it reliably, wiring it to your data, keeping it patched, and not melting your electricity bill is the hard part.
I spun one up on a spare machine at home. It worked. Then I left for a week, the disk filled, the service crashed, and a client request sat unanswered. The "free" model cost me a relationship.
Open source won the quality war and is still losing the operations war. For a hobbyist that is fine. For a business, the cloud bill starts to look like a bargain.
Use the open ones to learn, to prototype, to own your stack. But do not mistake "I downloaded it" for "I deployed it."
