The inbox zero myth, now with AI
AI did not give me inbox zero. It gave me a cleaner inbox I still do not read. The problem was never the email.
Inbox zero was always a status symbol dressed as a system. Adding AI just made the cleanup automatic, which exposed the real issue: I did not have a reading problem, I had a deciding problem.
The AI sorts, summarizes, and drafts replies. What it cannot do is tell me which five emails actually move my week forward. That judgment is mine, and no model removes it.
Once I stopped chasing zero and started asking 'what needs a decision today,' the inbox became manageable without being empty. A few untouched threads are fine if none of them are urgent.
AI is a great assistant for email and a terrible substitute for priorities. The myth survives because emptiness feels like control.
