Why I trust desktop AI over cloud for sensitive work
For some files I will not hand a server. Local models got good enough this year to be a real option.
I process documents I would never email to a stranger, yet cloud AI asks me to do exactly that. For a long time the trade was clear: convenience won, privacy lost. That trade narrowed this year.
Local models on a decent machine now handle summarizing, drafting, and coding assistance well enough for most of my private work. They are not the absolute best, but they are good and they never leave the laptop.
The decision is by data class, not by default. Public, reusable content goes to the strong cloud model. Client-sensitive or personal material stays local. The line is boring and it works.
Cloud is still my default for hard problems. But 'send it to the server' is no longer my only reflex, and that shift matters more than any benchmark.
