Your AI Summary Is Wrong in a Specific Way

AI summaries smooth over the uncertainty the source actually had. A hedged report becomes a clean claim, and the hedge was the truth.

AI summaries are confident and often wrong in a specific way: they smooth over the uncertainty the source actually had. A hedged report becomes a clean claim, and the hedge was the truth.

I compared a summary to its source and the model had quietly dropped three 'maybes' and one 'according to some.' The result read better and lied more. Fluency bought at the cost of accuracy.

The fix is to read the source for anything you'll act on, and to prompt the model to preserve uncertainty, 'keep the caveats.' Most people don't, because the clean version is more satisfying to read.

A summary is a starting point, not a substitute. The skill that matters now is checking, not querying, because the answer arrives pre-polished and the polish is where the error hides.
