Le comparatif honnête
Ask around and you'll hear Canva described as a design tool and Descript as a podcast tool, in different conversations with different people. In my one-person content operation they turned out to be two halves of the same pipeline: visual assets and audio, both feeding the same feed.
The pipeline, concretely: each podcast episode becomes a quote card, a carousel, and an audiogram. Descript's half is the audio — record, kill the filler words by deleting text, and its clip finder pulls the two best thirty-second moments automatically. Canva's half is everything the audience sees — quote cards from those moments, the carousel frames, the episode cover.
Each tool has tried to invade the other's half. Canva added basic audio tools and they're fine for a slideshow with music. Descript can render video and even some visuals, and I used it for screen-share content. But for designed graphics — brand colors, layouts, the stuff that makes a feed look intentional — Canva is still a class above anything inside Descript.
The gap between them is a copy-paste, and that's the honest cost. I keep a Canva brand kit with the podcast's fonts and colors, so every quote card takes two minutes. Audiograms — audio with a waveform over the episode art — are built in Canva, audio dropped in from Descript's export. Twenty minutes per episode for a full social kit.
If you only publish one format, you only need one tool — this pairing only makes sense for people feeding a multi-format feed. But if that's you, the chain of Descript to Canva is the fastest one-person production line I've found, and the two subscriptions together cost less than one freelancer's day.
