Canva's AI feels like a vending machine: type a wish, get four options, pick one, move on. Leonardo feels like being handed the camera and told the light is your problem. I tested both on a batch of ten social graphics and the split was predictable.
For the seven 'just need something clean' requests, Canva won because I never left the layout tool. The image magically fit the slot. Leonardo made me generate, download, upscale, then import, and two of those imports needed background removal I had to do elsewhere. The friction is the cost of control.
For the three 'I have a specific weird vision' requests, Leonardo won. Canva's 'surprise me' mode kept offering the same cheerful stock energy. Leonardo let me lock a character, push the prompt, and iterate on one detail. The control is why it exists, and why it's slower.
The honest take: Canva is where I click when the deadline is in an hour. Leonardo is where I click when the asset has to be original and I'll be judged on it. Most of my week is the first kind. The second kind is maybe two assets, and they're the ones people compliment.
Verdict: Canva for volume and fit, Leonardo for the hero asset you care about. Renting Leonardo's canvas for a birthday-post graphic is paying for a skill you won't use.
