Elicit vs Perplexity: Talk to Papers vs Talk to the Whole Web

Elicit and Perplexity both cite their work, which is why people conflate them. They aim at different libraries. Elicit is built for academic papers: ask a question, get answers extracted from studies with the sentences to prove it. Perplexity reads the open web.

When I'm surveying a field, Elicit orients me fast. It hands back 'here are twelve studies and what each found,' which is exactly the map a literature review needs. Perplexity would pull blog posts, news, and a paper or two, useful but noisier.

Perplexity wins for current events and 'what just happened,' because the web is fresher than any paper index. Elicit's sources lag, by nature of peer review. For 'who won the debate,' Perplexity. For 'what does the evidence say,' Elicit.

Researchers should learn both and route by source type. Using Perplexity for a lit review means citing a blog. Using Elicit for breaking news means missing the story. The citation feature is shared; the shelf is not.
