Turning a 40-Page PDF Into a Podcast I Actually Finished
A research paper I'd been avoiding became a 25-minute walk. The workflow is dumb, and that's why it worked.
I had a PDF I needed to understand and kept not reading. So I turned it into something I'd listen to on a walk, which is the only format my attention respects.
Step one is not glamorous: paste the text into a chatbot and ask for a conversational two-host script, one skeptic, one explainer, about 2,200 words. The temptation is to ask for a summary. Don't. A summary loses the argument; a script keeps it as a thing you can hear.
Step two is the part that matters. ElevenLabs has a conversational voice mode where you assign each host a voice and it handles the back-and-forth. Feed it the script, pick voices that don't annoy you, and export. The first take will drift, so I regenerate any section that rambles.
The mistake I made at first was keeping all forty pages. A podcast about everything is a podcast about nothing. I cut the appendix, the methodology appendix, and the bits only three people care about. Twenty-five minutes of the actual point beat an hour of faithful coverage.
Did I understand the paper better? Yes, because I finished it. The format didn't make me smarter, it made me reach the end, which is the part I kept failing at.
