How I Prototype an App Over a Weekend With Bolt (Before Spending Real Money)

Most app ideas die at the whiteboard or cost a fortune to test. This Bolt routine gets a working prototype in front of real users by Sunday night, for the price of one weekend.

An idea that takes three months and a development budget to test will never get tested, which is why the whiteboard graveyard is so full. Bolt collapses the loop: my last three side-project ideas each became a working, shareable prototype in a weekend, and one of them was good enough to keep. The routine below is how to spend those two days so Sunday night ends with a URL, not a pile of prompts.

Saturday morning is scope surgery, and it happens before you open Bolt. Write the one-sentence job the app does and the three screens that prove it, no more. The classic failure is asking Bolt for the full vision, and the full vision is where prototypes go to die in complexity. My scheduling prototype was calendar, booking form, and confirmation; everything else, accounts, settings, admin panels, waited for evidence that the core deserved it.

Build in the order users will touch: first screen to last, asking for one working screen at a time, and testing each in the browser preview before moving on. When something looks wrong, describe the symptom precisely rather than the fix you imagine, the button overlaps the header on mobile, not refactor the layout. Specificity is the entire skill here, and screenshots pasted into the prompt beat paragraphs of description every time.

Saturday afternoon belongs to the data, because a prototype with fake data is a demo and one with real data is a test. Connect the backend Bolt offers, get your actual content or a realistic dataset in, and click through every flow yourself with the impatience of a real user. The bugs you find Saturday night are the cheap ones; the UX confusions you find are the valuable ones, and each becomes a specific prompt Sunday morning rather than a vague rebuild.

Sunday is polish and deploy, in that order, and the discipline is knowing when to stop. Fix the top three rough edges, write a real first screen so strangers understand the app without instructions, then deploy and send the link to five people who match your target user. Watch what they do, not what they say. If nobody uses it twice, the weekend cost you nothing but time, and if they do, you now build the real version with evidence, which is the entire point of prototyping.
