The Honest Limits of AI Translation for Real Conversations

AI translation is shockingly good for text and shakier for tone. A field note from actually using it with people.

The Honest Limits of AI Translation for Real Conversations

AI translation has gotten good enough that I'll fire off a message in a language I don't speak and get a reply that makes sense. That's a genuine miracle compared to ten years ago. It's also not as solved as the demos imply.

For factual text, menus, directions, a basic question, it's excellent. The words land, the meaning holds, nobody's confused. I use it daily for that and rarely double-check.

The cracks show in tone. Sarcasm, politeness levels, and the difference between "fine" and "I'm only saying fine" are exactly the things a model smooths over. In a casual chat that's funny. In a message to a client or a landlord, it can quietly offend.

My workaround is to keep messages plain and short when I rely on translation, and to add a note when tone matters. "Please read this lightly" goes a long way when the tool can't carry the warmth for me.

Also, don't trust it with names, addresses, or numbers without a look. It guesses, and a wrong digit in a meeting link wastes more time than typing slowly would have.

Treat it as a very fluent but tone-deaf friend. Great for getting the point across, useless for reading the room.
