I Cloned My Own Voice and Immediately Regretted It

ElevenLabs made a clone from ten seconds of audio. It was too good, and that's exactly the problem.

I cloned my voice with ElevenLabs because a client needed a narration fast and I had a cold. Ten seconds of audio, a model trained, and suddenly a digital me was reading copy I'd never spoken.

It sounded like me. Not 'close enough,' but me, including the slight rasp I have when tired. The first reaction was delight. The second was a chill, because if I could do this in ten seconds, anyone with a voice note of me could too.

I used it for the project and it saved a day of recording. Then I started wondering where that clone lives, who at the company can access it, and what happens when a scammer uses a similar clip on someone who trusts my voice. The technology outran my comfort with it.

I now treat a voice clone like a password: scoped, revoked when the job is done, never left lying around. ElevenLabs is brilliant at the craft; the responsibility is entirely mine, and the tool gives you no reminder of that.

Would I do it again? For a one-off yes. As a permanent stand-in for me, no. The convenience is real, and so is the risk you don't feel until it's too late.
