Why I let the AI write the ugly first draft (and stopped polishing blank pages)
The blank page was costing me more than a bad sentence. Letting AI draft the ugly version freed the real work.
I used to stare at a blank doc and call it thinking. It was procrastination wearing a beard. So I started letting the AI write the worst version first.
The trick is permission to be bad. I ask for a draft I know I will rewrite, and suddenly the page is not empty. Editing someone else's words is easier than summoning my own from nothing.
What changed in the output surprised me. My final pieces got sharper, not lazier, because I spent the energy on cuts and specifics instead of the opening line. The AI's bland draft was a scaffold, not a crutch.
The risk is real: if you accept the draft, you sound like everyone else. I treat the first pass as a stranger's rough notes and rewrite the voice back into it. The tool earns its keep by ending the stall, not by writing the thing.
I do not do this for everything. For a hard argument or a personal note, I still start cold. But for the eighty percent that is just get it written, the ugly draft is the unlock.
If the blank page is your enemy, stop respecting it. Let something ugly exist, then make it yours.
