I Fed Claude a Wall of Run-On Sentences and Asked It to Fix the Rhythm

A client doc read like one breath held for three pages. No editor was free at 11pm, so I pasted it into Claude with one instruction: fix the rhythm, not just the grammar. Here is the framing that worked.

I had a client doc that read like one breath held for three pages. No editor was available at 11pm, so I pasted the whole thing into Claude with one instruction: fix the rhythm, not just the grammar.

The trick that worked was framing. Make it readable aloud beats correct this. Claude then breaks long sentences, swaps passive for active, and cuts the words that were only there to sound smart. It respected my meaning, which is the part a blind grammar check gets wrong.

I learned to ask for two passes: first structure, then tone. The first split the run-ons; the second tightened the voice so it still sounded like me, not a committee. Asking for both at once gave a flatter result.

One caveat I keep relearning: Claude tidies, it does not know the facts. Any number or name it could plausibly fix stays yours to verify. I treat its edit like a sharp intern's, not a final proof.
