Screencast Tutorials in Descript: Record, Delete Words, Ship
The tutorial that used to take an editing evening now takes forty minutes. The whole method is recording in Descript and never touching a timeline.
Screen-recorded tutorials have one universal problem: the 12-minute recording contains 5 minutes of tutorial. Descript's transcript-based editing turns the cut from a timeline job into a delete-words job, and my production time dropped from an evening to about forty minutes.
Setup matters because retakes are what kill tutorials. Record your screen and mic into Descript's native recorder, or import if you have another capture tool. Then do the take in sections: intro, each step, outro. Sectioned takes give you natural edit boundaries; one long take gives you one long problem.
The editing sequence that works, in order: delete filler words with the bulk action (hesitations first, 'um' everywhere), then delete false starts at the sentence level, then fix pacing by tightening the pauses Descript flags. Resist fixing anything frame-level until the transcript is right. Ninety percent of tutorial editing is removing words, and the transcript shows you exactly which.
The details that make it watchable are cheap in Descript: studio sound cleans up laptop audio, cursor highlighting and zoom effects land on specific words in the transcript (click the word, add the zoom), and captions auto-generate from the same transcript you are already editing. My zooms all happen where I clicked in the text, which is also where viewers need them.
The final pass is a watch-through at 1.5x speed checking for visual drift: moments where the screen shows something the narration has moved past. Cut those too; 'the screen catches up to the words' is the entire illusion of a tight tutorial. Export, upload, and start the next one, because at forty minutes each you can finally afford the series.
