How I Write a Full Song With Verses in Suno (Without Settling for Slot-Machine Output)

Most people type a vibe and pray. A lyric sheet, a structure prompt, and three targeted rerolls turned my Suno output from demo lottery into deliberate songs.

The default Suno experience is a slot machine: type a mood, hit generate, and accept whatever song falls out. That is fine for entertainment and useless if the song needs to say something specific. The change that fixed everything for me was arriving with a lyric sheet instead of a vibe. Write or adapt your lyrics first, with verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus in mind, because Suno will happily build a full structure around words you actually chose.

Use the custom mode and paste your lyrics with structure tags. Marking sections explicitly gives the model a blueprint instead of asking it to guess where the chorus lives. Keep verses concrete, two or four lines each, because vague poetry generates vague melodies. My best results came from lyrics I had already read out loud once to check the rhythm, since awkward spoken syllables become worse sung syllables.

The style prompt is where most people undersell themselves. Instead of a genre word, describe the record like a producer would: tempo, instrumentation, vocal gender and texture, era, and one reference for feel. Ten to fifteen descriptive words beats two genre tags in my experience, and adding a mood arc, such as starting sparse and building, nudges the arrangement along with the lyric.

Do not reroll the whole song when one part is wrong, because the rest was probably good and the dice will take it from you. Regenerate with a revised style prompt, or extend and adjust from the section that worked. I keep a note of which prompt produced which take, because my third reroll is usually an accidental improvement on the structure of the first, and a small edit to that prompt recovers it in one shot.

The finishing pass is human. Listen once for structure, once for lyrics against the melody, and once for the two-minute test, whether a stranger would keep listening. Suno will not fix a weak second verse no matter how you prompt, and it does not need to: it hands you a real arrangement of your real words, and the craft of deciding whether those words deserve the arrangement stays yours.
