AI Meeting Notes vs Actually Listening

The summary is a crutch that can quietly atrophy the one skill the meeting needed from you.

AI meeting notes are wonderful, and they've made me a worse listener. Knowing a perfect transcript will exist, I half-check out, plan my reply, skim my phone. The tool caught the words; I missed the room.

The subtle loss is the unsaid stuff: the hesitation before someone agreed, the tone that meant 'I hate this but won't say it.' Transcripts capture sentences, not the pressure behind them, and I've started relying on the sentences and missing the pressure.

I'm not deleting the tool. I'm changing when I read it. Now I stay present in the meeting and only open the summary after, to catch the detail I'd have forgotten, not as a license to disengage. The note is a backup for memory, not a replacement for attention.

The trap is treating the summary as having been there. You weren't, the model was. For decisions that turn on tone and trust, the model's record is necessary but not sufficient. Listen first, read second, or the notes will be perfect and useless.
