I Automated My LinkedIn Outreach and Hated It

The automation worked perfectly and cost me the only part of networking that matters.

I built a tidy little agent that found prospects, wrote personalized-ish messages, and followed up on schedule. Replies went up. Meetings went up. And within a month I wanted to tear the whole thing down, because I'd optimized myself out of the conversations I actually cared about.

The messages were good enough that people answered, but they were me-shaped, not me. When someone replied with a real question, I had to step in and admit I'd been partially absent from the start. That's a strange way to begin a relationship.

The metric that broke it was quality of conversation, not volume. The automation maximized the latter and quietly drained the former. I was 'networking' in a way that looked identical to the spam everyone complains about, just better written.

I kept the research half, the part that finds who's worth talking to, and deleted the send half. Writing the actual message myself takes ten minutes and is the only part where I learn anything. Automate the lookup, never the handshake.
