The quiet winners of October's AI launches

A dated roundup of the AI launches that matter this week, minus the marketing.

Three things moved in AI this week. I'm skipping the hype and giving you the dated facts, because the dates are the only part that matters.

Claude's 5.5 family landed across the tiers (Sept 22 - Oct 7, 2026). Opus 5.5 topped the index at 58 and cut price a fifth. Sonnet 5.5 followed at 56 and sits at number two. Haiku 5.5 arrived Oct 7 at $0.10/$0.50 per million tokens, 90 percent below Haiku 4.5, for short-context work.

Decision models became a real category (Oct 1, 2026). Perplexity released pplx-decider-v1-27b at $0.04 per million input tokens with free output. Cloudflare shipped Clef at $0.24 and Clef-flash at $0.09, also free output. Microsoft opened MAI-Voice and MAI-Transcribe. The cheap, narrow models undercut GPT-6 Luna on single labeled calls.

Mistral opened Large 4 in preview (Oct 6, 2026). A one-trillion-parameter model at $1.36/$4.18 per million tokens, scoring 38 on the index, with open weights promised by month's end. It is the European lab's clearest shot at the front row.

The pattern: the flashy agents get the headlines, but the gated flagships and the cheap decision models are what will actually change how we build. Watch those.
