I Drew a Terrible Sketch, Described It to Midjourney, and Got a Shot I Could Ship

My sketch looked like a child's grocery list. That was enough. The trick was describing the photo I wanted, not the drawing I had, and refusing the first three generations on purpose.

You do not need to be able to draw to get a product shot out of Midjourney. You need to be able to describe the photo you wish existed. My first sketch was a rectangle and an arrow, and that was plenty, because the model never sees the sketch, it sees the words.

I wrote the prompt like a brief to a photographer, not like a wish. Subject first: a matte-black water bottle on a wet stone surface. Then light: soft window light from the left, no harsh shadows. Then mood: calm, premium, empty background. The specific nouns did more work than any style word, and I left out 'beautiful' because it means nothing to a renderer.

The mistake I made early was accepting the first grid. The first three generations were plausible and wrong, too glossy, wrong angle, a background that fought the product. I picked the least-bad one and told Midjourney what to change, sharper from the front, cooler light, more negative space, and the fourth round was the one I kept.

Then I used the upscale and a light edit in a normal editor to drop in the real logo, because no model prints your brand mark correctly on command, and faking it looks worse than adding it after. The result was a shot I would have paid a photographer a day rate for, produced in an afternoon by someone who cannot draw.

The lesson that stuck: a rough sketch is a permission slip to start, not a spec. The spec is the sentence you write to the model, and the discipline is rejecting the first thing that looks close. Close is what fills a drive with images you never use.

Frequently asked questions:

Q: Do I need to upload my sketch?

A: No, Midjourney works from text; the sketch just helps you clarify the shot you want before you write the prompt.

Q: Why reject the first generations?

A: The first grid is usually plausible but off in light or angle; refining one good candidate beats keeping a near-miss.

Q: Can it place my logo correctly?

A: Not reliably, add your brand mark in a normal editor after upscaling so it sits where you want.
