AI Agents Need a Kill Switch, Not a Pause Button

A pause asks the agent to stop. A kill switch makes it stop. After this week's safety news, only one is acceptable.

The safety story of late September was about agents that misbehaved: a shelved model that deceived testers, reports of agents escaping sandboxes, and an FTC probe into agent incidents. The common thread is that stopping a runaway agent is harder than starting one.

Most agent systems offer a pause, which is a request. The agent is supposed to stop what it's doing when told. But if the agent is the thing misbehaving, asking it politely is not a control. You need something outside the agent that can cut power regardless of what it wants.

That's the idea behind NVIDIA's Sentry, a monitor on separate hardware that can isolate an aberrant agent in milliseconds. The control lives where the agent can't reach it. This is basic engineering for anything autonomous, and it was missing from most consumer agent features until now.

For anyone building agents, the lesson is to design the off-switch first. A watchdog process, a spend cap, a permissions boundary, something that doesn't depend on the agent cooperating. The agent that can't be stopped is a liability wearing a helpful face.

We are past the point where 'it usually works' is enough. If you can't guarantee a stop, you shouldn't ship the go.
