A Desktop That Runs a Trillion-Parameter Model Is a Trap and a Tool

NVIDIA's DGX Station promises local trillion-parameter inference. The memory math is the catch.

NVIDIA's DGX Station for Windows, shown October 7, packs 748GB of coherent memory and up to 20 petaflops, pitched as local inference for models near a trillion parameters. It's due in the fourth quarter.

The trap is the memory split. Reports indicate the 128GB unified-memory SKU exposes only about 110GB to the GPU once Windows takes its share. That decides which model actually fits once weights, cache, and runtime compete for the rest.

So read the spec you'd really buy, not the headline. The trillion-parameter claim is for the fat SKU; your desk probably gets the smaller one.

Used honestly, it's a real tool for teams that can't send data to the cloud. Used as a status symbol, it's an expensive way to run a model that fits on cheaper gear.
