I actually read the terms of service of my AI tools. You should know what I found

A weekend with eleven privacy policies and terms documents. Most were forgettable. Three clauses changed how I use these tools.

Nobody reads terms of service, which is why companies write them the way they do. I spent a weekend reading eleven documents covering the AI tools I touch weekly — chatbots, a transcription tool, an image generator, a meeting notes service. Most of it was the usual legalese. Three findings changed my habits enough to write down.

First: training data opt-outs exist but are buried differently everywhere. Two tools let me opt out of having my inputs train future models with a toggle; three required an email to support; one required a form that mentions enterprise plans only. My transcription tool, the one that hears my client calls, defaulted to training on them. It now doesn't, because I found the switch in a settings page labeled 'Data controls' under 'Improvement program.' Look for that phrase.

Second: retention is not deletion. Several tools 'delete' content from your view while keeping backups and logs for defined periods — 30 days is common, one said 90. For most content that's noise. For the meeting transcript with salary negotiations in it, that's a real window where the text exists on servers after it's gone from your screen. Sensitive calls now get recorded locally, and the sensitive paragraphs go into the tool, not the whole file.

Third: the business tier changes the contract, not just the price. On every tool that had one, the enterprise or team plan included the strong data protections — no training, shorter retention, sometimes regional processing. The consumer plan is the discount you pay for with your data. If you use a consumer AI tool for work material, you're likely violating your own client contracts in ways nobody has noticed yet.

I'm not saying these tools are bad actors — the documents were more reasonable than their reputation. But the defaults are the business model, and the defaults favor the company. An hour with the data controls pages of the tools you use daily is the cheapest privacy upgrade available.
