Word Copilot Now Cites Sources. The Hallucination Problem Didn't Leave.
Citations are a step forward, but a cited sentence can still be wrong about what it cites.
Microsoft added a citation feature to Word Copilot meant to ground generated text in your documents and cut the habit of confident invention. The intent is right: show where the claim came from.
But a citation isn't truth. The model can still misread the source and attach a reference that says the opposite of what it wrote. I've seen summaries that pointed at the right page and the wrong paragraph.
Treat the citation as a pointer to verify, not a receipt. If the sentence matters, open the link and read the actual line.
Citations make hallucinations easier to catch, not impossible. The feature is a speed bump on the road to wrong, not a wall.
