NotebookLM vs Elicit: Your Documents vs The World's Literature

One AI is grounded in what you upload. The other goes looking through millions of papers. A literature review run through both showed me they are phases, not rivals.

De eerlijke vergelijking

NotebookLM and Elicit both answer questions about research, and the fundamental difference took me embarrassingly long to internalize: NotebookLM only knows what you gave it, while Elicit goes out into a corpus of over a hundred million papers. I used both on a genuine literature review about remote work interventions, and they turned out to be the two halves of one workflow.

NotebookLM's superpower is being provably grounded. Every claim in its summaries links to the exact passage in your uploaded PDFs, which means checking its work takes seconds instead of trust. The audio overviews, two synthetic hosts discussing your papers, are genuinely useful for getting the shape of a topic during a commute. Its wall is equally absolute: ask it something beyond your sources and it correctly refuses, which is honest but limiting during discovery.

Elicit works the other side of that wall. Give it a research question and it surfaces relevant papers, then extracts structured data, sample sizes, findings, methods, into a table you can actually sort. For screening forty studies into the twelve that matter, it did in an afternoon what would have taken me a week. The tradeoff is that extraction quality varies, and I caught two mischaracterized findings that only careful spot-checking against the PDFs revealed.

The workflow that finally worked: Elicit first, to find out what exists and which papers are load-bearing. Download the keepers, upload the pile to NotebookLM, and live inside it while writing, using its citations to keep every claim honest. The two tools cover the classic research loop, discovery then synthesis, and each is the other's missing half.

Verdict by job: if your problem is a pile of PDFs you need to understand, NotebookLM, and nothing else in its category is close. If your problem is that the pile does not exist yet, Elicit. Students writing coursework, researchers running reviews, and analysts doing evidence work should strongly consider both, because the subscription pair still costs less than the hours either one saves per month.
