Vergelijking van AI-tools
HeyGen vs Runway: Talking Heads and Dream Sequences Are Not Competing Sports
I used HeyGen for a training library and Runway for client concept films. Both bills arrived, and it became obvious the two products share a category label and nothing else.

De eerlijke vergelijking
HeyGen and Runway both get called AI video tools, which is technically true and practically useless, because I have never had a project where choosing between them was the decision. I spent a month using HeyGen to build an onboarding video library and Runway to generate footage for client concept films, and the two experiences barely overlapped.
HeyGen is in the presenter business. Type or paste a script, pick an avatar, and out comes a person saying it, with lip-sync in dozens of languages that genuinely holds up on a laptop screen. The translation feature turned one English onboarding video into five localized versions in an afternoon, and that alone justified the subscription. The ceiling is the format: it always looks like someone talking to camera, and when the script or the avatar drifts toward uncanny, viewers notice within seconds.
Runway is in the footage business. Text-to-video, image-to-video, motion brush, camera controls, it generates shots that never existed, and the current models produce seconds of genuinely filmic material. But it demands direction skills: my hit rate improved only after I started treating prompts like shot lists and accepting that each usable second costs real credits. Nobody has ever mistaken Runway output for a talking-head video, and you would never want them to.
The production math makes the split concrete. HeyGen sells minutes of consistent presentable content; my twelve-video library was a volume play where cost per finished minute was tiny. Runway sells seconds of impossible footage; a thirty-second concept film with eight generated shots cost more than the entire HeyGen month, and was worth it for exactly that job.
Verdict: corporate training, localization, any content where a person explains something, HeyGen, and it is not close. Ads, art, b-roll that cannot be filmed, visual storytelling where the image is the point, Runway. Teams doing serious video work will end up with both, because the moment one project needs a talking head and the next needs a dragon over a city, the category label stops mattering.
