Vergelijking van AI-tools
NotebookLM summarizes your files. Scite checks the literature. They are not the same job.
I fed 40 papers into both before a literature review. One made me feel prepared, the other kept me honest. Here is where each earns its place.

De eerlijke vergelijking
I had a literature review due and a pile of 40 PDFs I had only skimmed. So I ran the same reading list through NotebookLM and Scite and watched where they disagreed. The gap between them told me more than either tool alone.
My method was simple: upload everything to NotebookLM and ask it to walk me through the field, then take one bold claim a competitor made and run it through Scite to see whether the papers actually backed it up. NotebookLM sounded confident. Scite showed three of those citations were contradicted by later work.
NotebookLM (notebooklm.google.com)
Best for: turning your own PDFs, lecture notes, and slides into grounded audio overviews and source-backed Q&A.
Key features: source-grounded answers with citations to your uploads, Audio Overview (a two-host spoken summary), YouTube and Slide ingestion, notebook organization, multilingual chat.
Free plan: a free tier with daily query limits and fewer notebooks than the paid plan.
Pricing: higher limits come with a Google AI Pro subscription (around $20 a month); a free tier stays available.
Pros: stays tied to your sources, fast for studying, the audio overview is genuinely good for commutes.
Cons: only as good as what you upload, no live web search by default, the spoken summary can smooth over disagreements.
Scite (scite.ai)
Best for: researchers who need to know how papers cite each other and whether a claim is supported or contradicted.
Key features: Smart Citations that label references as supporting, contrasting, or merely mentioning, reference search, Scite Assistant, citation dashboards.
Free plan: a limited free tier for basic lookups.
Pricing: deeper search and dashboards sit behind a paid research plan (roughly $20 a month).
Pros: surfaces contradictory evidence you would otherwise miss, strong for literature reviews and grants.
Cons: academic-focused, thin value outside research writing, the best data is paywalled.
My verdict: NotebookLM when you need to absorb a stack of material fast and draft a first pass. Scite when a claim's truth actually matters, because it shows you the papers that push back. If you only ever read the summary, you will repeat a retracted finding and not know it.
Frequently asked questions:
Q: Can NotebookLM replace reading the papers?
A: For a first pass, yes. For anything you plan to cite, open the source it points to and confirm the quote.
Q: Does Scite work outside academia?
A: It helps anywhere a factual claim needs backing, like due diligence or policy briefs, but it lives in the research corpus.
Q: Which should a student buy first?
A: NotebookLM's free tier covers most coursework. Add Scite when you start writing something that gets graded on accuracy.
