One Zapier Flow Now Summarizes My Inbox So I Don't Have To
I stopped reading every newsletter and started reading a daily summary. The setup took an afternoon and the only hard part was deciding what counts as important.
My inbox was a firehose of things I'd asked for and then ignored. The fix wasn't inbox zero, it was a single daily digest that summarized the stuff I kept meaning to read.
The flow is dumb on purpose: on a schedule, pull new emails from a label, send the batch to a model with 'summarize each in two lines, flag anything needing a reply,' and drop the result in a doc I actually open.
The step people skip is the filter. If you summarize everything, you've just moved the firehose. I only feed it newsletters and non-urgent threads, never the 'your account' mail that needs a human.
What changed: I read the digest on the train and delete half without opening it, which is the whole point. The summaries are good enough to triage and bad enough that I still open the ones that matter.
Zapier (zapier.com)
Best for: anyone whose inbox is mostly batch-readable noise
Key features: scheduled zaps, email triggers, AI summarization step, multi-app routing
Free plan: free tier with a low task cap
Pricing: paid starts around $20 a month
Pros: no-code, runs while you sleep, easy to adjust
Cons: AI step quality depends on the model you pick, and tasks add up in cost
Start with one label, not the whole inbox. A narrow flow you trust beats a clever one you ignore.
Frequently asked questions:
Q: Will it miss an urgent email?
A: Only if you route urgent mail into the summarized label. Keep real alerts out of it.
Q: Does this need code?
A: No. Zapier's AI step does the summarizing.
Q: What if the summary is wrong?
A: You still open the important ones. Treat the digest as a triage, not a source of truth.
