Local AI on a Five-Year-Old Laptop Is Finally Real
I ran a useful model on a machine I was about to recycle. It changed my 'buy new' math.
A small open-weight model handled my note-summarizing and classification locally on a 2021 laptop. Slowish, but private and free, and it never phoned home.
For tasks that aren't frontier-hard, local is now good enough. The cloud model is still better, but the gap for my daily jobs is smaller than the subscription cost.
This matters for anyone handling sensitive files. The data never leaves the machine, and the bill is zero.
Don't throw out the old laptop yet. It might be a perfectly fine AI box.
