My notes were a graveyard, a thousand files I'd never open again. Then I stopped writing notes and started structuring them, and the pile turned into something I could actually query.

The shift was small. Every note now has a type, a date, and the one decision it was about. The tool I use reads across all of them and answers what did I decide about X instead of me digging for an hour.

What changed wasn't the tool. It was the discipline of making each note findable by the question I'd later ask. A note you can't retrieve is a note you didn't really keep.

The trap is over-structuring. I tried a rigid system once and spent more time tagging than thinking. The version that stuck is loose enough to write in and tight enough to search.

Notes are only as good as your future self's ability to find them. Treat the pile like a database, not a diary, and the stuff you wrote last year starts earning its keep.
