This isn't a one-off. Anthropic keeps its most capable models inside trusted-access programs, and OpenAI rated Astra at a 'critical' cyber threshold before pulling it. The pattern is now explicit: the frontier is announced, then rationed, and 'available to you' depends on who you are and what you applied for.

For buyers, the practical move is to stop waiting for the headline model and evaluate what you can actually turn on. Argon's restricted launch tells you the model exists; it doesn't tell you when your security team gets it. Plan around the accessible tier, and treat the gated one as a future option, not a present tool.

The split is healthy in one sense and frustrating in another. Capability is being matched with safeguards, which is probably right. But it means the model you read about and the model you use are increasingly two different things, and that gap is now permanent.
