Why I Cancelled Three AI Subscriptions and Kept Two

My AI tool bill hit a number that made me laugh out loud. The audit that followed taught me more about my actual workflow than any productivity book.

The cancellation email said your subscription ends on the 30th, and I felt nothing, which was strange, because three months earlier I had been convinced this tool was essential. That was the moment I audited every AI subscription I carried: eleven tools, some annual, and a monthly cost that had quietly grown into a car payment. The audit ended with three cancellations and two kept subscriptions, and the reasoning turned out to be more useful than the savings.

The first lesson was distinguishing between tools I used and tools I identified with. The AI video editor I cancelled had been used twice since March, both times badly, both times followed by me finishing the job in the tool I already knew. It survived in my stack for months because I liked the idea of being the kind of person who had automated video editing. Usage logs do not care about your identity, and they were brutal: three of the eleven tools had fewer than five sessions in ninety days.

The second lesson was that overlapping tools hide inside different feature names. I was paying for two AI writing assistants that both did the same core job, one marketed to marketers and one to everyone, and when I finally ran the same tasks through both in the same week, I could not tell which output was which. Features that sound different, brand voice versus tone detection versus style guides, often route to the same underlying behavior. The tool that integrated with where I already worked won; the other one was redundant and had been for a while.

The two survivors earned it with a simple test I now apply to everything: did I reach for it when it was not in front of me. My general assistant passed instantly, it is open before coffee. My transcription and meeting-notes tool passed on frequency alone, running on every call without me deciding anything. Everything else had to be remembered to be used, and remembered tools are hobbies, not infrastructure.

The deeper change was adopting what I now call the two-question rule for any new AI tool: what does it replace, and what does it make worse. Every keeper had a clear answer to both. The cancellations had taught me that most AI subscriptions are bought for the future self who will finally be organized, and the future self never logs in. My bill dropped by seventy percent and, honestly, nothing about my output changed. The tools I actually use were never the problem.
