Zapier vs Make vs n8n: Three Ways to Automate, Three Different Headaches

Most people pick an automation tool by the logo they saw first. After wiring the same workflow across Zapier, Make, and n8n, I can tell you the right choice is about how much logic you want to see and how much you're willing to babysit.

Zapier is the forgiving one. Its visual builder connects 6,000-plus apps without code, and a beginner can ship a useful zap in an afternoon. The downside is price and fragility: per-task pricing climbs fast, and a complex zap turns into something you're afraid to touch. Use it when the workflow is simple and you never want to see a line of JSON.

Make treats automation as a real flowchart. Its branching, iterators, and routers let you express logic Zapier makes you fake with filters, and the operations model is generous. The price you pay is a steeper learning curve - building and debugging a scenario takes practice, and the first time a loop runs twice you'll stare at it for an hour.

n8n is the open-source escape hatch. You self-host or run it in the cloud, and you own the data and the bill. For engineers who want full control, versioned workflows, and no per-task tax, it's the obvious pick. For everyone else, the freedom is also the burden: you maintain it, you host it, and the docs assume you can code.

My rule: Zapier for the quick win, Make for the logic-heavy but still no-code job, n8n when the workflow is core to the business and you refuse to rent it. Match the tool to how much you want to tinker, not to which one has the nicest landing page.
