ElevenLabs vs Speechify: Studio Performances vs Reading Machines

ElevenLabs and Speechify both turn text into voice, and for years I assumed they were competitors. A month of daily use with both revealed almost no overlap: one is a performance studio, the other is a reading machine, and confusing them wastes money in opposite directions.

Speechify's job is throughput. It reads my saved articles, PDFs, and that growing Instapaper queue at 2 to 3x speed, and its voices are optimized for sustained listening comprehension rather than beauty. The highlight-follow and note features make it a genuine reading workflow. What it is not: something you would put in a published video. It sounds like a tool, not a narrator.

ElevenLabs' job is production. Its voices carry emotion, its voice cloning is the category benchmark, and the dubbing and projects features make it a studio pipeline for audiobooks, character work, and localization. For anything an audience will hear, it is the obvious pick. What it is not: something you would use to plow through a tax PDF at 2.5x, because performance costs processing time and credits.

The pricing models reflect the split. Speechify is a flat subscription that rewards heavy daily listening. ElevenLabs is credit-based and rewards production bursts; narrating a full book is a real budget line, while reading your inbox would be absurd on it.

My month ended with both subscriptions intact and distinct jobs: Speechify consumed roughly forty articles I would otherwise have skimmed or lost, and ElevenLabs produced a narrated product demo and two character voices. If you only consume, buy Speechify. If you publish, ElevenLabs. Buying both is defensible only if your week genuinely contains both jobs.
