Build the Workflow Before You Buy the Tool

I bought a fancy automation tool and had nothing to automate. The empty pipeline was the real problem, and no subscription fills a process you haven't designed.

I bought a fancy automation tool and had nothing to automate. The empty pipeline was the real problem, and no subscription fills a process you haven't designed.

The order matters: know the repetitive task, map the steps, then pick the tool that fits. Buying first means bending your work to the tool's shape, which is backwards.

I listed my weekly drudgery and found three things worth automating. Only one needed a paid tool; the others were a spreadsheet formula away. The tool was the last piece, not the first.

Vendors sell the tool as the solution. The solution is the workflow; the tool is the wrench. Skipping the design step is why so many automations die unused.

Before the next purchase, write the process by hand. If you can't, no tool will save it. If you can, you'll often find you needed less than you thought.
