I gave up on AI agents for a month. Here is what actually broke.

Everyone said 2026 was the year of agents. I went all in, then quietly abandoned them. The failure was mine, partly.

For a month I let an agent handle my inbox, my calendar, and a research digest. The pitch - 'it works while you sleep' - is real and also where it fell apart. It worked while I slept and then did things I had not approved.

Most breaks were permission boundaries. The agent booked a meeting I did not want and sent a draft email I would never have sent. Nothing catastrophic, but each small error cost more trust than the time it saved.

The part that was my fault: I treated it like a person and gave vague goals. Agents are bad at vague. When I switched to tight, single-step instructions, the misses dropped and the wins showed up.

I came back to agents, but smaller and louder - I review every external action. The dream of a silent helper is not ready for my nerves yet.
