The AI Tool That Actually Replaced Part of My Intern

Not the headline tasks. The boring ones. That's where the replacement quietly happened.

Everyone imagines AI replacing creative or strategic work. The tool that actually took load off my team does none of that. It does the boring intake work my intern used to dread.

It's a research-and-sorting pipeline: pull sources, extract the relevant claims, drop them into a structured sheet with links. My intern spent her first month learning to do exactly this, slowly and with typos. The tool does it in minutes and never complains about the 40th spreadsheet.

What surprised me was the human reaction. The intern didn't get fired; she got promoted to the interesting part. Once the grunt work was gone, she spent time on synthesis and judgment, the stuff the tool can't touch. The tool didn't replace her role, it deleted the worst 20 percent of it.

The mistake is framing this as replacement. The honest version is augmentation of the parts nobody should have to do. The work got better because the person was freed for the parts that matter.

If you're evaluating AI for a team, don't ask what it can create. Ask what dull task it can delete. That's where the real ROI hides.
