A Year of Voice Cloning Taught Me More About Trust Than About Tech

I cloned my own voice for a project. Hearing it lie on my behalf changed how I think about what a voice means.

I cloned my voice because a client needed 200 short audio snippets and I did not want to record 200 takes. Ten minutes of samples later, the clone was close enough to fool my mother on the phone.

That last sentence is the whole story, really. The technology is not the news. The social fact is.

We spent a century building systems that treat a voice as proof of a person. Banks, schools, grandparents. Now the voice is just a file you can generate. Every one of those systems is quietly obsolete and most of them do not know it yet.

I stopped using the clone for anything that a real human might believe was me without consent. The line turned out to be easy to draw once I imagined the worst version of it.

The tech is a mirror. It shows us which of our trust assumptions were always a little flimsy. Most of them were.
