I watched a junior researcher spend an hour asking ChatGPT to find a source it kept inventing. That hour would have taken Perplexity four minutes, because Perplexity shows its receipts.
Perplexity's whole deal is citations. Ask it a question and it comes back with links you can actually click, usually to real pages. ChatGPT can do search now too, but the instinct it was trained on is "compose a plausible answer," not "find the document."
ChatGPT is better when you already know what you think and want help shaping it. Perplexity is better when you are starting from zero and need to know what is real and where it came from.
The failure mode of each is the other's strength. Perplexity can feel thin on synthesis; it gives you sources more than insight. ChatGPT can give you insight dressed as fact and forget to mention it invented the fact.
My rule: researching something new, Perplexity first. Writing something up, ChatGPT. Mixing them up is how people end up citing a paper that does not exist.
