AI Agents Got Real This Year. Most Teams Still Can't Use Them
The agent demos stopped being fake, which exposed a different bottleneck: workflows nobody wrote down and permissions nobody wants to grant.
The agents finally crossed the credibility line. This year's generation completes actual multi-step work, research a vendor, draft the comparison, file the summary, with error rates low enough to trust on tasks where a mistake is annoying rather than expensive. The demos are real now, and that is precisely when the hard part starts.
The bottleneck moved from capability to permissioning. An agent that can act on your systems needs credentials, and every team I have watched deploy agents stalls at the same meeting: who owns the service account, what happens when it sends a wrong email, which logs do we audit. The technology got ready faster than the governance, and governance does not demo well.

The teams succeeding with agents share a pattern: they start with the boring, verifiable, low-permission tasks, tagging, summarizing, first-draft anything, and expand as the audit trail earns trust. The teams failing tried to deploy an autonomous colleague on day one and spent the quarter cleaning up.
So yes, agents are real, and the gap they exposed is a compliment to the technology. The next two years of enterprise AI adoption will be less about model releases and more about the least glamorous work in software: writing things down, granting permissions deliberately, and building the audit trail that lets a machine act on your behalf without a heart attack.
