I Up-scaled a Client Image and Almost Got Caught

A client needed a hero image bigger than the file they gave me, and I ran it through an upscaler rather than admitting I didn't have a better source. It looked great until they zoomed in and asked why the text was soft.

The upscale bought me an hour and cost me trust. The image was fine at a distance and wrong up close, which is exactly the kind of error a client notices because they're looking harder than you are.

The lesson wasn't about the tool. It was about the lie of omission. I should have said the source was low-res and offered the real fix, a fresh render or a different asset, instead of hoping nobody looked closely.

What I do now: upscale only for placeholders and mockups, and I say so. The real deliverable gets a real asset, because the one time it matters is the time you hoped it wouldn't.

AI image tools are great at making a maybe look like a yes. Your job is to know when a yes is actually a maybe, and to say which one you're shipping.
