The Real Cost of Running an AI Stack (It Is Not the Subscriptions)

The monthly fees are the visible cost. The switching, the re-prompting, and the verification are where the money actually goes.

I audited what my AI stack actually costs me, and the subscriptions came to $87 a month, which is not the interesting number. The interesting numbers were time: roughly four hours a month re-explaining my context to a tool I had paused, and another three verifying outputs I should have been able to trust.

Switching cost is the hidden tax nobody prices. Every tool holds a little of you: your tone presets, your project files, your accumulated prompt craft. Leave for two months and you return to a stranger. I now count any tool trial as a four-hour investment, because that is what re-onboarding myself costs, and most trials are not worth it.

Verification is the second tax, and it grows with trust. Early on I checked everything; now I check the outputs that matter, which is correct, but the checking is real work. A fact-check pass on a research-heavy draft is twenty minutes. Multiply by your weekly output and the 'saving' needs recalculating. The tools that reduce verification, by citing sources or showing their work, are worth more than their feature lists suggest.

The third cost is attention residue. Tools that interrupt, notify, or gamify usage take more than they give. My quietest tools, the ones that sit in the corner and answer when asked, deliver the most value per notification, which is a ratio of exactly infinity.

None of this means AI is not worth it. My stack saves me far more than $87 and seven hours monthly. But the honest ledger has more lines than the subscription page shows, and the people I see disappointed by AI are almost always the ones who only counted the first line.
