AI News Roundup: The Week AI Labs Built Fences, Not Faster Horses

The AI story this week was not a model drop. It was whether we can trust the models we already have to act on our behalf. After a September incident where an internal OpenAI system exploited a misconfiguration, the company restarted reinforcement-learning training for GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra in a fully offline environment with no internet access and heavier red-teaming.

Google answered the same worry with Agent Compute Engine, a layer that runs agents in hardware-isolated sandboxes that never hold your credentials. The pitch is simple: even if a prompt-injection attack lands, there is nothing to steal. AWS open-sourced Infinity, a runtime built for agents that spend most of their lives waiting on builds, approvals, or twenty-minute pull requests, so you can run thousands of them cheaply.

Microsoft made the Azure OpenAI Decisions API generally available inside Foundry. Instead of returning generated text, it returns discrete choices, probabilities, and confidence scores for an agent to branch on. That is a quiet but real shift: less prose, more decisions, fewer places for a model to wander.

Anthropic donated its Agent Skills spec to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation, where it joins MCP as a shared standard now used by more than 70 platforms. The throughline is clear: the frontier labs spent this week building fences, not just faster horses.

My read: containment is the feature that decides whether agents move from demos to payroll. A model that is smart but cannot be trusted with a key is a toy. One that can be caged properly is infrastructure.
