AI Tools for Students That Are Not Cheating (A Line Worth Drawing)
The line between tool and cheat is simpler than the discourse suggests: it is about what happens when the tool is removed.
Students ask me whether using AI is cheating as if there were one answer. There is, but it is not about which tool. The line I have settled on after a lot of thinking: an AI use is cheating when the graded skill is the one the AI performed, and it is a tool when the AI performed something else entirely.
The practical test is removal. If the AI vanished the night before the exam, would you be worse at the thing being tested? A student who uses AI to explain a concept they then understand is fine; remove the AI and the understanding remains. A student who uses AI to write the essay has outsourced exactly what the essay was measuring, and removal exposes nothing, because there is nothing underneath.
The legitimate uses deserve promotion because they are genuinely powerful. Explaining: a patient tutor that never sighs is a real gift, especially for concepts the classroom moved past too quickly. Practice: generated problems with feedback beat static textbook sets. Feedback on your own work: 'here is my argument, where is it weak' is what good teachers do, scaled to midnight. Translation of your own understanding into better phrasing sits near the line, and the removal test settles it per case.
The uncomfortable news for students is that the legitimate uses are harder than the cheating ones. Explaining until you understand takes longer than submitting something. The cheating path is optimized for exactly the wrong thing: the grade rather than the capacity. The capacity is what the grade was a proxy for, which makes the cheat a self-defeating purchase.
For teachers, the same test gives a humane policy: ban the outsources, welcome the tutors, and say so explicitly. Most students are not trying to cheat; they are trying to survive a workload and nobody told them where the line is. Drawing it in public, with the removal test, is more useful than surveillance software has ever been.
