My Honest AI Writing Workflow in 2026 (Including the Parts That Are Still Manual)
The draft is automated. The thinking is not. A full walkthrough of how one article goes from idea to published, with timings.
People ask how long my articles take and I have learned to give the honest answer: about two hours, of which the AI does maybe forty minutes of work. The workflow matters more than the tools, so here is the whole thing, timings included.
Ideation and research, twenty minutes. I collect the angle from what annoyed me or surprised me that week, then run targeted searches to check whether the claim I want to make is true and whether anyone has said it better. This step is manual on purpose: the angle is the article, and I have never seen a tool produce one worth reading.
The outline, ten minutes, half-automated. I write the argument as five rough bullets, then have the model attack it: where is this thin, what would a skeptic say, which point is actually two points. The model is a better editor of arguments than a writer of them, and this is the highest-value prompt in my entire workflow.
The draft, twenty minutes of model time. I feed it the outline and one style instruction: first person, specific, no conclusions I have not earned. What comes back is a B-minus draft, and the B-minus is important. An A-minus AI draft means it rounded off my edges; a B-minus draft still has holes I can fill with the things only I know.
Editing, the other hour, fully manual. Cutting sentences that could be from anyone, restoring my actual opinion where the draft hedged, checking every claim against a source. The final read is always out loud, because that is where the machine rhythm shows. Two hours, one article, and not one paragraph I would disown.
