Apple Intelligence in China Is a Half-Step, and That Is the Interesting Part
Apple got Apple Intelligence approved in China, built on Alibaba's Qwen and Baidu, but without Siri AI or the newer Genmoji. A wider launch is penciled in for December. It is a half-step, and the half is the story.
China gets the helpful bits, translation and writing tools, without the flashy assistant everyone in the US brags about. That is not a downgrade by accident. It is a negotiation rendered as a feature list.
For Apple, the win is simply being allowed in at all. For users, it is a reminder that 'AI' means different things in different app stores, and the gap is regulatory, not technical.
I would rather see a cautious launch than a blocked one. But the version of Apple Intelligence that ships in China is a clear picture of how much local partnership shapes what an AI is allowed to be.
