Stop Asking AI to Be Your Coworker. Treat It Like a Very Fast Intern.

The framing that breaks most AI workflows is 'my assistant.' A coworker shares context you never gave. An intern does exactly what you wrote and flags the rest. Guess which one scales.

I burned a month treating AI like a colleague who just gets it. It doesn't. The shift that fixed my results was demoting it in my head to a very fast intern who is brilliant, forgetful, and desperate to please.

An intern needs the brief written down, the guardrails explicit, and the first draft reviewed before it touches anything real. When I started writing prompts like onboarding docs, the output stopped surprising me in bad ways.

The other change: I stopped asking it to 'handle' things and started asking it to 'draft for my approval.' The moment a task became 'show me first,' the failure rate dropped and my trust actually went up, which is backwards from what the demos promise.

Coworker is a marketing word. Intern is an operating manual. The tools are good enough to be the best intern you've had; they're not good enough to be the colleague who covers for you when you're out.

Frequently asked questions:

Q: Does this mean AI can't be autonomous?

A: It can run loops you've defined. It can't invent the judgment you didn't supply.

Q: Why does framing matter?

A: Because 'assistant' makes you skip the brief, and the brief is where quality lives.

Q: When is it safe to let it act alone?

A: Only on tasks with no money, no mail, no people, and an easy undo.
