Test Every AI Tool on a Boring Task Before You Trust It With an Important One
Demos are designed tasks. My evaluation method runs every new tool against the dullest job in my week, and the results are surprisingly predictive.
Every AI tool demo is a best case wearing a spotlight. My evaluation method goes the other way: I give every new tool the most boring task in my actual week before I let it near anything that matters. The boring task is where the marketing wears off.
The boring task has properties the demo does not: unclear inputs, no success fanfare, a real deadline of 'whenever,' and the requirement to work on a Tuesday afternoon when I am tired. Transcription tools get my worst-quality audio, the call recorded next to an open window. Writing tools get my least glamorous assignment, the update email nobody wants to write.
What the boring test measures is reliability, and reliability is the only feature that compounds. A tool that is brilliant on the demo task and flaky on the mundane one will cost you more than it saves, because you will build nothing on top of flakiness. The tool that is unremarkable and always works becomes infrastructure.
The test also exposes integration friction that demos hide. The demo has clean inputs pre-loaded; my Tuesday has a file in a format the tool half-supports and a workflow that requires exporting from somewhere first. Ten minutes of friction per use is a death sentence for daily tools and invisible in a five-minute trial.
My scoring is one question after a week of the boring test: did I reach for it without remembering it existed? That is it. Tools that pass get promoted to real work. Tools that need my enthusiasm to function have failed quietly, and better to learn it on the update email than on the client deliverable.
