The Resume Tool That Lied About ATS, and What It Actually Got Right

A resume builder told me my draft scored 47 out of 100 for ATS compatibility, which sounded alarming until I asked what the other 53 points were made of. Most of that number was theater.

A resume builder told me my draft scored 47 out of 100 for ATS compatibility, which sounded alarming until I asked what the other 53 points were made of. They were things like keyword density and a formatting preference the tool happened to like. None of it was a real applicant tracking system I would ever face.

The uncomfortable truth is that most ATS scores are theater. Real trackers parse for contact details, readable section headers, and standard file formatting, then a recruiter reads the thing. A flashy score that docks you for using two columns or a creative font is measuring obedience to one vendor's taste, not your odds of being read.

What actually helps is boring. A single column, a clean docx, real job titles, and the words from the posting used honestly, not stuffed. A tool that drafts bullets and checks spelling is doing useful work. A tool that invents a score to make you anxious enough to upgrade is not.

I still use a resume builder, but I ignore its ATS meter the way I ignore a carnival strength tester. The draft it produces is good; the number it prints next to the upgrade button is not information. Treat any score that wants you to pay to improve it as a marketing line, not a measurement.
